Health Sciences Senior Capstone H475

My long-term career goal is to become a pharmacist. I am passionate about health sciences and aspire to help others by improving their well-being through pharmaceuticals. Becoming a pharmacist will allow me to merge my interests in health, science, and patient care while contributing to the community's health needs. To reach my career goal, I need to complete my pre-pharmacy courses and gain more experience in the field. My next steps involve applying to pharmacy schools, where I can pursue my Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. I am also focused on gaining hands-on experience by continuing my internship as a Pharmacy Technician at CVS. This experience provided me with a valuable understanding of the pharmaceutical field and gave me insight into what being a pharmacist entails. In addition, I need to continue excelling academically by completing the necessary courses and meeting the admission requirements for pharmacy school. I also plan to engage in additional volunteer or shadowing opportunities that will allow me to build my professional network and further prepare for pharmacy school. I am uniquely qualified to reach my career goal due to my academic background and hands-on experience. My major in Health Science and my minors in Tourism Management and Health Administration provide me with a broad understanding of healthcare and the administrative side of the industry. In addition, my role as a Pharmacy Technician at CVS allows me to gain practical experience in the pharmaceutical field, which will be invaluable once I enter pharmacy school. I also have a strong network of professors, mentors, and peers at IUPUI who provide guidance and support in my academic and career journey. My involvement in various extracurricular activities, such as volunteer work and student organizations related to health, has helped me develop leadership skills and a deeper understanding of healthcare, further contributing to my qualifications. After this class, my short-term goals include maintaining a high GPA, excelling in my remaining courses, and continuing my internship as a Pharmacy Technician to gain more hands-on experience. I plan to research pharmacy schools, prepare for the application process, and continue developing my network within the healthcare community. In the long term, I aim to apply to pharmacy schools within the next year, complete the necessary steps for admission, and pursue my PharmD degree. Once I graduate, I hope to become a licensed pharmacist and make a meaningful impact in the field.

Capstone Reflection
When I first started the Health Sciences program, I honestly didn’t know much about what the field really involved. I just knew I wanted to help people and work in healthcare somehow. Over time, I’ve learned that health sciences is a lot more than just working in a hospital or clinic. It’s about understanding how health works in different settings, how to support people from all kinds of backgrounds, and how the system works behind the scenes too. One of the biggest things I learned was how to make a resume and how to look for internships. I used to feel really lost when it came to those things, but now I feel more confident about putting myself out there. I also learned how important communication is—whether it’s writing professionally, speaking clearly, or just knowing how to connect with people. Throughout the program, I think I’ve grown a lot as a communicator and a problem solver. For example, I’ve had to work on group projects where everyone had different ideas, and I learned how to listen better and help find solutions we could all agree on. This capstone course especially helped me think more critically about the real-world side of healthcare. It’s not just about learning facts—it’s about how to apply them and think outside the box. There were definitely some challenges. Balancing this course with other classes and personal stuff wasn’t always easy. Sometimes I’d feel overwhelmed or unsure if I was doing things right, especially during research or assignments. But I learned to stay organized, ask for help when I needed it, and just take things one step at a time. That helped me a lot. This capstone also made me reflect on my career goals. Right now, I work as a pharmacy technician, and my long-term goal is to become a pharmacist. This experience has motivated me even more to keep working toward that. At the same time, it also opened my eyes to other areas like health administration and tourism management, which I never really considered before. Now, I’m more open to those paths too because I see how many different ways there are to be involved in health and wellness. Going forward, I want to keep building on what I’ve learned. I plan to look for more opportunities—whether that’s internships or jobs—where I can grow in the health field while working toward pharmacy school. I also want to keep learning about the business and leadership side of healthcare, especially in areas like health admin and tourism, so I can keep all my options open.

Research in Health & Rehabilitation Science H 442:
As a Health Science major preparing for pharmacy school, HLSC 442 has provided me with a strong foundation in research methodology that will support my future in clinical and evidence-based practice. This course helped me understand how to define and differentiate between various population types, such as target, source, and study populations. I also learned how to reduce sampling bias through proper techniques like random and purposive sampling, which are essential for generating valid and generalizable data. The course emphasized the importance of calculating an appropriate sample size and statistical power to ensure meaningful study outcomes. Learning about Type I and Type II errors helped me understand how small or poorly planned studies can lead to incorrect conclusions—something that is especially important in pharmacy when interpreting clinical trials and drug studies. I also developed skills in creating reliable questionnaires, selecting question types, and ensuring participant confidentiality. Understanding how to word questions, use appropriate response scales, and organize surveys logically is essential for gathering accurate data from patients or study participants. In the qualitative portion of the course, I learned how to conduct and analyze interviews, focus groups, and observations. Through coding techniques like axial coding, I practiced identifying themes and building toward meaningful conclusions. Finally, I learned how to assess the quality of research through credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. These principles will help me critically evaluate research studies, apply evidence in clinical settings, and contribute to improving patient care as a future pharmacist.

Reflection on Ignite Final Project:

Through completing the Ignite Final Project for the course Health Sciences Research Methods, I gained valuable insights into the process of researching, analyzing, and presenting complex information in a concise and engaging format. The project challenged me to communicate a health-related topic effectively within a time constraint, which required careful planning, the ability to synthesize information, and the use of visual aids to support my message. One of the key lessons I learned was the importance of clarity in communication. The Ignite format emphasized the need to distill complex information into clear, actionable points, which improved my ability to focus on the most essential aspects of my research. Additionally, receiving feedback from my instructor allowed me to refine my project, helping me to identify areas for improvement in both content and presentation. This experience has not only improved my research and presentation skills but also helped me develop a deeper understanding of the importance of effective communication in health sciences. I am confident that these skills will be beneficial as I progress in my Health Sciences degree program and apply them in future courses and professional settings.

Health Related Agency Report
Before this assignment, I had no idea Indiana had a dedicated system for tracking birth defects and developmental problems. It was eye-opening to learn about the Indiana Birth Defects and Problems Registry (IBDPR) and its mission to monitor these issues. The report revealed the sheer scale of their work, tracking dozens of conditions and collaborating with other organizations to tackle emerging challenges like the opioid crisis. What struck me most was the IBDPR's commitment to using data to drive positive change. Their efforts to educate healthcare providers and even launch targeted campaigns, like the folic acid initiative, showed me the real-world impact of their work. This assignment wasn't just about understanding a report; it was about understanding the crucial role this often-unseen organization plays in ensuring the health and well-being of Indiana's families.
